The two-seater has become ten centimeters wider. You can feel them. The “search” for the keyhole has come to an end with the new generation of smart. The city car is no longer started next to the handbrake on the center tunnel, but rather normally on the steering column. With the same length of 2.69 meters, there is no huge feeling of space in the driver’s seat, but it is more, a little more than in the predecessor.
The seats in the proxy equipment shown are of course the finest that smart will be offering from autumn. Accordingly, you can sit in the Stadtzwerg for a few minutes. Lateral support is sought in vain, perhaps not absolutely necessary for the city. Smart has made an impressive improvement with the optional leather multifunction steering wheel. The steering wheel rim is recessed, similar to how it is often done in sports cars.
It feels good new, and the paddles also make a good first impression when standing. Compared to a short drive in the still current smart, the new generation smart immediately makes the desired hip impression. Cozy, more pleasant and, above all, a little more space for the passenger, mark the further development of the predecessor.
The big steps in design can hardly be hidden. Instead of pointed tears, the new smart is now making big eyes. They then fall slightly in the direction of flow of the A-pillar. Unfortunately, they are not in the vertical position, as is the case with the smart forstars Concept. The front as such is also quickly compared to the Aston Martin signet. It seldom drives on our roads, but where it does, the two vehicles can hardly be distinguished at a glance.
At the rear, the relationship to the last concept cars can be seen more easily. The short overhangs at the front and back have always been known from smart. The square taillights underline the box design (now “one and a half box design”). On the other hand, the five-speed manual transmission is completely new. This follows the commands on the selector lever smoothly, not crisply. Whether this and the new infotainment solution (as well as the JBL sound system) are sensible and “at Daimler level” has to be confirmed later in a test drive.
Then the “increased” range of the H4 headlights has to prove itself. Because at smart, xenon has been consistently dispensed with, and new lighting technology is not even available for a surcharge.
