Not only Giulia, but also Stelvio was a direct hit. After a long period of abstinence, Alfa Romeo is back in the middle class twice. With the Giulia sedan, but also with the even more important SUV Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The mid-range SUV with the 2.0-liter turbo unit asks for a test drive.
Same drive – same design DNA as in the Giulia
The style of the Stelvio is close to the Giulia, and the drive is comparatively crisp. The power is transmitted backwards through the carbon fiber drive shaft. Even with the Q4 all-wheel drive, the Stelvio remains rather rear-heavy, which is to say that normally 100% of the drive power goes to the rear wheels. 280 horses drive the Italo SUV and make similar sporty progress as in the sedan.
Stelvio with a low center of gravity but a high seating position
The first noticeable difference manifests itself mainly in the sitting position. The weight sits deep in the Stelvio, and the engine is also behind the front axle, which means that the balance is on a par with a sports car. From the good road holding, one can only guess how well the 510 hp top version will ultimately have to drive. With a little more than half as much power, the Stelvio drives through corners like hardly any other SUV in its class.
In the dynamic mode of the “DNA”, he consumes revs and fast combinations of curves. Only the winter tires show the sporty Italian the limits of physics. So it can drive like a really big one, like the Alfa Romeo Scudetto on its chest. Slight mistakes, they are formative for the character, but also has a modern Alfa. The rear view camera is unfortunately positioned in such a way that it is almost never clean as soon as the first drop of rain falls.
Typically Alfa – not for everybody
On the other hand, the ambience is positive, with a sporty character, not least due to the cold, solid aluminum shift paddles. An Alfa Romeo has to be loved even nowadays. The Stelvio is not an SUV like any other. He has charisma and there are also traits that are not always positive. Such as the not exactly exemplary caution.
