World premiere of the citroen c5 aircross with patented suspension

At Auto Shanghai 2017, Citroen is showing the production version of the Aircross concept car. The supposed closeness to the Peugeot 5008 is difficult to cover up, but the new Citroen C5 Aircross shows typical peculiarities and above all the current Citroen face. Especially since the SUV has saved a definitive world premiere, borrowing from bygone times: a suspension with a hydraulic stop.

Three SUV models – three different wheelbases

With a wheelbase of 2.73 meters, the Citroen C5 Aircross ranks between the Peugeot 3008 and 5008. Technically, however, all models are based on the current EMP2 platform, especially since parts of the new i-cockpit from Peugeot also appear in the interior. The presentation in Shanghai is not entirely by chance, because the C5 Aircross will first be introduced in China in the second half of 2017 before it comes to Europe at the end of 2018.

From Peugeot, the Citroen takes over the 12.3 inch TFT cockpit in digital form and also the 8 inch touchscreen in the center console. We already know the integration into the horizontal interior from other, current Citroen models. However, the main focus of the SUV should be on the suspension, which has 20 patents.

A conventional suspension consisting of a shock absorber, spring and mechanical stop has been expanded for this. Citroen added two hydraulic stops, which provide tension and pressure on both sides. With light pressure, the spring and damper regulate the vertical movements by themselves, so they do not need the hydraulic stops. However, it was possible to achieve a greater spring deflection here, so that, according to the engineers, a kind of “flying carpet” should be created and the occupants float over the uneven terrain.

In contrast, with greater pressure and greater relief, all components work together. A conventional attack absorbs the energy, but also gives some of it back. The hydraulic stop, on the other hand, absorbs the energy and dissipates it so that there is no springback or the like. According to Citroen, the result is or should be an extremely comfortable driving experience.

Citroen C5 Aircross: compact SUV equipped with all kinds of technology

With the other internal dimensions, the C5 Aircross offers a square trunk with a volume of 482 liters, which can be accessed by kicking the foot. In addition, when the rear seats are folded down, the loading area is flat. When it comes to assistance systems, Citroen relies on the current range that Peugeot also offers in the newer SUV models. These include traffic sign recognition, the high beam assistant, the Active Safety Brake System, as well as the adaptive cruise control and the active lane departure warning. In addition, the “360-degree camera” is used, which digitally composes a picture from two 180-degree cameras.

For China, the SUV comes with 165 or 200 hp from a gasoline turbo engine. In addition to the DS7 Crossback, the C5 Aircross will also be offered as a plug-in hybrid (with the same drive). A 200 hp turbo gasoline engine is combined with two electric motors, which ensures a system output of 300 hp. The purely electric range should be around 60 kilometers. It has not yet been decided which engines will be offered for Europe.
