In the third generation, the Kia Ceed again challenges the compact class. As a European hit, the “Ceed” not only changes its name (formerly “cee’d”) but also upgrades. New engines, new design and new technology for the Korean. The only thing missing – as always – is a fair price.
New Kia Ceed: first Kia with traffic jam assistant
The new Ceed is the first Kia to have a traffic jam assistant. This also actively keeps the steering on track, but the new Kia Ceed can support its driver between zero and 130 km / h through various sensors as well as the vehicle in front. Another innovation is the 1.4-liter turbo gasoline engine with 140 hp. For the moment, the new top engine in addition to the 1.6-liter diesel with either 115 or 136 hp, but in any case 280 Nm torque and the Euro 6d-temp emissions standard (also for gasoline engines).
The entry-level petrol engine is still the 1.4-liter vacuum cleaner with 100 hp, above which there is still the 1.0-liter three-cylinder with turbocharging and 120 horses. As standard, all engines are equipped with a 6-speed gearbox; in the case of the 1.4-liter turbo and the 136 hp diesel variant, the 7-speed dual clutch transmission is also available.
Tidy cockpit with many new options
Inside, the horizontal design is carried out as we know it from the newer Kia models. In addition to a 5 inch display, you can also choose between a 7 or 8 inch touchscreen for infotainment. As soon as the touch function is on board, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto are also supported. Overall, there are more soft-touch surfaces, but also metal and chrome-satin optics in the cockpit. When it comes to seat covers, you can choose between fabric, leather or a leather imitation. Depending on the equipment, the seats not only have seat heating but also seat ventilation in the first row.
Premiere for the 5-door – another body variant in Geneva
The new Kia Ceed comes with eleven paintwork for the 5-door – another body version will follow in March – and up to 17 inch rims. In doing so, it appears flatter and wider overall. 23 millimeters lower than its predecessor and 20 millimeters wider. However, the length and wheelbase are unchanged. The overhangs have been changed, which supports the visual dynamics. At the front overhang, 20 millimeters were removed and attached to the rear. This also increases the trunk volume by fifteen to 395 liters.
The C-pillar also grows in size, while the entire vehicle is drawn up tighter thanks to clear and straight lines. In particular, the shoulder line has been strengthened in the design. The front now looks wider, flatter and more sporty than before, and that already in the standard look. The rear comes with permanent LED lighting (daytime running lights) and positions itself more powerfully. LED daytime running lights are also standard from Von, but LED headlights are optional.
Production of the new Kia Ceed will start in May with the first deliveries in the second quarter of 2018.
